Mercury is a toxin, not a poison, and a person would have to ingest or absorb a considerable amount to cause fatal concentrations. One source lists a lethal dose of as much as 4 grams of mercury from inorganic compounds. So while mercury vapor can be extremely hazardous, mere contact with the liquid metal would not cause death. In the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, many people handled mercury without protection and very few died from it. A fatal dose would take between 12 and 48 hours to irreparably damage organs. The Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) is now believed to have died of mercury poisoning.
