a wet syestem always has water behind the head it is charged with water at all times all the pipeing is water.. wet system usually used in doors

a dry system has a diffrent type of valve allowing a clapper inside the valve to have water from the underground being held back by air in which the system is charged with air until the valve trips (usually sprinkler being popped or very low air pressure) so the sprinkler system it self on a dry valve contains air until tripped then water flowes when tripped usually used outside parking garages and canopys or where very cold
