There are many dangers. One is asphyxiation. If tunnels are blocked, you might simply run out of air.

Another is Firedamp, (a name for methane gas) which can also asphyxiate but adds the extra danger of being highly flammable (so you could blow yourself up).

Another is the coaldust itself. This affects the lungs and can cause short term choking. Over the longer term, it is known to cause lung cancer and silicopneumoconiosis.

I wouldn't go down there.
