The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after takeoff on January 28, 1986, killing the 7 US astronauts aboard. The explosion was caused when a frozen O-ring allowed hot gases from a solid-rocket booster to rupture the main fuel tank containing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The bodies of the crew, including Christa McAuliffe (the inaugural Teacher in Space), were not located and recovered from the ocean until early March. The final body, that of Gregory Jarvis, floated loose during recovery and was not found again until April 15.
