There were actually several positive things that resulted from the Challenger disaster. Though the disaster cost billions of dollars and the lives of its crew, there was still a positive side. As a result of the disaster, several aspects of the Space Shuttle program were re-designed and re-organized to be safer.
Firstly, the space shuttle's solid rocket boosters (SRBs) were redesigned to be more effective and less dangerous. The Challenger accident was caused because of cold weather weakening the O-rings that prevent hot gasses from escaping the sides of the boosters. Fifthly, changes were made to the shuttle's general-purpose computers. These software changes provide the shuttle with an automatic mode that allows it automatic stable flight for cew bailout. Otherwise the crew would never be able to escape.
Lastly and most importantly, the space shuttle program was re-organized over the following years. Risk identification and reduction programs were put into place that allowed NASA employees to locate potential risks so that they could be fixed.
If these much needed safety changes had not taken place, many other shuttle disasters could have resulted.
