Persons whose clothes catch fire often panic and run. Running 'fans the flames', adding more oxygen to areas of fabric and skin. Therefore, the phrase "Stop, Drop, Roll" was instituted to remind people who are on fire to:

STOP! - Stop in your tracks! Do NOT run!

DROP! - Drop to the ground. Now, less surface area of the body is exposed to full air oxygen.

ROLL ! - Roll over and over or side to side to extinguish the flames. Continue rolling until the flame puts itself out... or until help arrives.
