Why do smoke detectors make a beeping noise when the electric goes off they are not hooked to any electric?

When the electricity goes out, a smoke detector may make a final beep as it's capacitor is discharged, as a warning. If the smoke detector has a battery backup, some detectors will beep just to let you know the power is off, and some other units will only beep when the power is off AND the battery is low. Usually there is a legend on the back of the unit that will tell you what the different beeps mean.

Can a smoke detector sound from heat only?

No, smoke detectors are triggered by detecting smoke particles in the air, not just heat. Heat detectors, on the other hand, are designed to only activate when a certain temperature threshold is reached.

Why does my smoke alarm only beep at night like it has a low battery?

It probably beeps during the day too, but there is too much ambient noise in an active household to notice it. Change the battery and be done with it.

Smoke detector for cigarettes?

A smoke detector is designed to detect smoke particles in the air, which could indicate a fire hazard. However, it may not be effective in detecting smoke from cigarettes because the particles are smaller and closer to the source. It is important to use a dedicated smoke alarm for tobacco smoke detection.

What are the advantages of hard wired versus battery only smoke detectors?

If the battery dies the smoke detector sill works, that the biggest advantage to using hard wire.

Does the ADT home security system cover fires, or only intruder alarms?

ADT will only cover intruders. Leave fires to your smoke detector.

What does one single loud beep coming from the smoke detector mean?

Hey there, I had this problem, do you live in a apartment block? If so, it is most likely connected to a main system, but the individual alarms still have 9v batteries in them to protect against power cuts, this battery is running low and needs replacing Or you can do what I did and just rip them off the ceiling in anger. Why do batteries in smoke detectors have to be replaced in 6 months?

They don't. Normally the 9 volt alkaline batteries in a smoke detector need to be replaced every year. If yours needs to be replaced every 6 months then something is wrong. If you are using a standard battery and not an alkaline battery it may only last 6 months. Use nothing but alkaline batteries. You sould hear a chirp from the detector when the battery needs replacing. A hard wired smoke detector has a battery back-up that should last around 2 years. If it only lasts 6 months then there is no power to the smoke detector and it is wired wrong or the wiring has come loose. The only reason to recommend changing batteries every 6 months is bacuase people tend to not change the batteries as they should. It has been proven by tests that about 35% of smoke detectors in homes have dead batteries.

What is a smoke alarm made out of?

Most smoke detectors work either by optical detection (photoelectric) or by physical process (ionization), while others use both detection methods to increase sensitivity to smoke. For the alarm part, in many single family detached and smaller multiple family housings, a smoke alarm is often powered only by a single disposable battery. An optical detector is a light sensor. When used as a smoke detector, it includes a light source (incandescent bulb or infrared LED), a lens to collimate the light into a beam, and a photodiode or other photoelectric sensor at an angle to the beam as a light detector. In the absence of smoke, the light passes in front of the detector in a straight line. When smoke enters the optical chamber across the path of the light beam, some light is scattered by the smoke particles, directing it at the sensor and thus triggering the alarm. An ionizing detector type of detector is cheaper than the optical detector; however, it is sometimes rejected because it is more prone to false alarms than photoelectric smoke detectors. It can detect particles of smoke that are too small to be visible. It includes about 37 kBq or 1 µCi of radioactive americium 241, corresponding to about 0.3 µg of the isotope. The radiation passes through an ionization chamber, an air-filled space between two electrodes, and permits a small, constant current between the electrodes. Any smoke that enters the chamber absorbs the alpha particles, which reduces the ionization and interrupts this current, setting off the alarm. From Wikipedia.

Why do nuclei that emit alpha particles such as americium-241 are safe to use in smoke defectors?

Actually, americium-241 is not safe. If you disassemble the smoke detector and remove the americium-241 pellet, and then ingest it, you are at risk of developing cancer, because an alpha emitter is dangerous when ingested. There are clear warnings on the smoke detector about this. The reason smoke detectors in general are safe is that the amount of americium-241 is very small, and it is very difficult to extract it from the smoke detector. Also, the alpha particles will not travel more than an inch or so in free air, and they will be stopped by the internal design anyway, so the alpha particle field inside the smoke detector is limited to the ion chamber, also inside the smoke detector.

What are the benefits of installing a motion detector light in your home?

Installing a motion detector light in your home can enhance security by deterring intruders, increase safety by illuminating pathways at night, and save energy by only turning on when motion is detected.

Do rental car have smoke detect?

no they do not. Neither does any other car.I received a call just this morning from a car renter who had a quest who smoked in the rental car he had to turn in. He stated that the tape (Smoke detector) had turned a deeper color, indicating someone had been smoking. I was unsure of the tape system he was speaking of, and the only suggestion I had was to not only shampon the carpet and upholstery, I would have to sanitize the air circulation systems to eliminate the smoke odor. I'm researching the smoke detector systemthe renter was speaking of. So I suppose there is a smoke detector in some rental cars. Stay tuned.Next Answer:If you are wondering how you might smoke in a rental car and not get caught, you're out of luck. I can always tell when a customer has smoked in a car. The smell gets into the upholstery and the interior plastics and is very obvious to people who don't smoke. You might not smell it, but we can.And if that smell is so hard to get out that we have to send the car to a detailer for a $300 shampoo job, you can expect to be billed for it. :)
