The Illuminati, one of the names they used, was an organization of men founded by Adam Weishaupt in 1776 in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. Nine years after their founding, they were disbanded by the Duke of Bavaria Charles Theodore at the encouragement of the Catholic Church. The Church's move to disband the organization was understandable since it was founded by freethinkers who opposed superstition and religious influence over public life and encouraged gender equality and education of women.
They control nothing in this world because they no longer exist.
Now, there are a number of poser organizations who use the name Illuminati, some spuriously claiming connection to the original Bavarian group; however, none of them are very secret, and most seem to have the single minded purpose of separating the gullible from their money, and sowing paranoid fear to make it easier to separate the gullible from their money.
