Sheer chance and the VAST number of people who consult some sort of fortune teller (astrologist, card reader, palmist, etc) means that at least ONCE in a while one of them will be right.

Fortune tellers certainly exist in that people who claim to be able to predict the future exist, but there is no hard evidence that suggests that these people can predict the future more accurately than the average person.

Some recent experiments have shown that humans' brains can respond to stimuli fractions of seconds before it occurs. While this is scientifically interesting, if the information is accurate, it would indicate that anyone can "predict the future" in fraction-of-second intervals on some subconscious level, which is very different from what fortune tellers attempt to do.

Fortune tellers in movies and books tend to be portrayed as being scary, however, most of the real ones are just ordinary people.

When I work reading palms, tea-leaves and cards, I often receive clients in jeans and a t-shirt. The room is well lighted and there is Classical Music in the background.

The only time I bother with the "costume and trappings" is if I'm hired to entertain at a party or other function, and the client has asked specifically for "the works".

Depending on the method they are using for scrying (see the future) the answer is basically yes.

However, as the future is not a static or fixed thing - it changes as each new variable come into the subject's life - the closer the predicted event is in the future the more likely it is to happen.

For example, if the fortune-teller predicts something happening in the next few hours, the chances are very good it will happen as predicted.

In a few days, the chances are still good; in a couple of weeks, the variables are larger and the accuracy is less reliable. In a couple of month or years, the variables have more effect on the future and the accuracy is reduced further.

Also, just by knowing about something in the future the subject can change it, either by avoiding the "bad" stuff of manifesting the "good" stuff.

The very best way to know how accurate a fortune-teller really is, is to have them place their predictions in sealed envelopes, one for each of the next three or four weeks. Then open them AFTER the week is up and see how accurate they were. Of coarse that does eliminate a lot of the "fun" of going to a fortune-teller in the first place.
