It began with the northwest coast indians. They had artifacts such as wooden sculptures and carved stone heads of an animal similar in appearance to the modern day bigfoot. they believed that it was a mythical creature, similar to the way they regarded bears and wolves. Sort of half spiritual and half real.

The skeptic dictionary tell us - According to Michael Wallace, Bigfoot is a hoax that was launched in August 1958 by his father Ray L. Wallace (1918-2002), an inveterate prankster. Shortly after Ray's death, Michael revealed the details of the hoax, which were reported widely in the press. Ray had a friend carve him 16-inch-long feet that he could strap on and make prints with. Wallace owned a construction company that built logging roads at the time and he set the prints around one of his bulldozers in Humboldt County. Jerry Crew, a bulldozer operator, reported the prints and The Humboldt Times ran a front-page story about "Bigfoot." The legend was born. However, a former logger, 71-year-old John Auman, claims Wallace left the giant footprints to scare away thieves and vandals who'd been targeting his vehicles.

The myth of a wild, hairy man is found even in Western European legends. There is even a painting called "The Nightmare" that shows a Bigfoot-like creature sitting on someone's chest as they sleep. Of course, there might be a few different reasons so many cultures have this myth... aside from it being a real creature. Perhaps, in ancient times we encountered more primitive humanoids (such as Neanderthal), and the memory of these primitive, hairy "ape-men" has been preserved through such legends. It could also be a similar way of passing down ancient memories of different species of other apes, such as Gigantopithecus.

Present day areas that have strong Bigfoot myths include Canada, The United States, India, Tibet, China, many of the South-East Asian nations, Indonesia, and the Amazon region.
