By preying on the gullible who are unaware of all the standard psychological tricks of the trade they have.

They can tell much about you just by you walking in. They know that on some level you have a bit of belief. Or that you want to.

They can also see a lot about you by your appearance and clothes and demeanor. They are the original "profilers", and they know full well that an 18 year old white man probably has college in his future, and that a 45 year old woman of any color has been hurt before by a man but is still hoping for true love.

They also know all about the strategic pause. "I see someone...their name starts with J...." (insert their strategic pause) Now you, wishing to fill the silence, and eager for this to continue, say, "You mean my cousin John?"

And the psychic then says, "Yes!" (And everyone knows someone who's name starts with some of the more popular letters like J.)

Often, they'll let you give your own reading. You'll be so full of asking them questions and providing them background, you won't even realize how much you are telling them that they just spout back at you. Or that they can derive more information from than you thought.

And of course, you want them to be able to succeed, or you'd not have come through the door. As you have paid good money, you are unlikely to say, "Hey, I've been foolish and wasted my money!" No, you'll have to - for your own self-esteem - convince yourself that they were "pretty much right".

That's how psychics work.

There are all kinds of psychics. Some work in trances and genuinely do not know what they are saying as they say it. Others use different forms and focuses for their scrying (crystal balls, dark mirrors etc), in these cases the psychic is in an altered state, (self hypnosis, deep meditative, etc) and are not usually aware of what they are saying. In the case of palmists, card readers and others who interpret physical items, they have to be aware of what they are doing. If you are referring to a precognitive psychic, then although they may know what they are doing, they have no control over what, or how much they see.

From the Christian point of view: Seeking guidance from a quote unquote psychic is basically forbidden in The Bible because they speak to other spirits other than God Almighty. To answer your question how it works, if God is forbidding it, there is another force that the Bible speak about that ability to enable this. But it is not good.

Of course there are also Prophets of the Lord, who still exist today, who get the answers from God, it being one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit who do many good things.
