There is much debate as to the nature of "possession". One line of thinking is that what many think of as possession is simply an elevated form of hysteria focused on religious themes. Much of the phenomena related to supposed possession is quite similar to extreme poltergeist cases. From field research, parapsychologists (as opposed to "ghost hunters") have learned that most if not all poltergeist cases are caused by living persons who seem to have unique abilities to affect the material world around them. Such people are called "poltergeist agents" or "PK agents". This seems to be an intentional or spontaneous ability that can be manifest locally or at a distance more rarely.

It has been found that the spontaneous agents often have psychological issues. It is quite common that these psychoses are directly related to the PK targets these agent choose, knowingly or unknowingly. Relief can occur by dealing with these underlying psychological issues.

One of the indications of "possession" is unexplained knowledge and specifically speaking in languages unknown to the afflicted person. It is useful to know that there are cases where exactly this same thing has happened not in any way connected with possession of any kind. The most recent example occurred a few years ago in England. A young woman who had lived her entire life in the English countryside had a fall and thereafter could only speak Japanese. She speaks fluently and has no memory whatsoever of the English language. This may indicate the deep and intrinsic connection between information and our supposed "material" world. If this is correct, such knowledge may not be as strange as it first seems. This may be in some way connected with apparent cases of telepathy, clairvoyance or remote viewing, and even mediumship.
