There is no way to get an accurate number of UFO sightings. With few exceptions no records were kept until the late 19th or early 20th century. But there is evidence that the Earth has had visitors from the beginning of time.

A UFO sighting occurs any time someone sees a flying object and fails to identify it, as such, the number of UFO sightings is staggering. Most UFO sightings can be easily turned into IFO (identified flying object) sightings with a little extra observation and a little less assumption. Not being able to identify every flying object you see is perfectly reasonable--believing that your lack of identification is evidence of a world-wide government conspiracy or a close encounter with intelligent alien life is absurd.
