They weren't a hoax. The footage could not be duplicated *today*, let alone back then. Kubrick's "2001" shows how lame even state-of-the-art lunar effects looked back then. The only way Kubrick had of hiding wires was to photograph from beneath the person, so their own bodies blocked the wire from view. Want to try that on a Rover drive? <G>. The best wire effects were done by Gerry Anderson's people back then. No way they could have done the Moonwalks, just take a look at his stuff. The thing with Kubrick is that since someone made a mockumentary about him doing the Apollo effects, some people weren't bright enough to know the mockumentary was a joke. See below some links I am leaving that help make things a lot clearer.

Certain ASPECTS of the moon flights, for various reasons incuding atmospheric density, the vacuum of space, excessive solar glare, could bot be photographed on Live TV and the broadcasters artfully substituted animated sketches of re-entry, stages separating, and so on, some also used disassemblable scale models of the Saturn V rocket, for example Cronkite. Then some asked- if part of this was faked ,could not the whole thing have been Hoked up? By the way about a year ago he Live TV tapes of the Moon Landings mysteriously disapperared from a vault in Washington! Very Interesting. There are a number of logical inconsistencies- and thick books have been written on this subject. certain aspects of the mission could not be photographed, and simulation was used-and it was generally flashed on the screen(Simulation) or (Animation) the announcer would explain that the capsule was beyond the view angle of telephoto cameras, or could not transmit due to the hot gases of re-entry disabling electromagnetic systems- which is true. But there is no evidence entire missions were Hoked up.
