You have as much right to imagine yourself an Illuminati as anyone else. Welcome!

They existed only from May 1, 1776, their date of organization, to ca. 1784. Since around 1784 (when they broke up), the Illuminati group has been fictional. During their few years of operation, it is possible that as many as 2,000 persons, Masons and non-Masons, joined the group. They are not remembered for any great accomplishments during their short term of existence.

The modern Illuminati are a fictional organization, created by the authors Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. Just as any person can claim to be an Illuminati, so can any group. There has never been any discernible proof of an actual conspiratorial Illuminati group, however.
