I, myself, am a werewolf and when I first mutated it was more or less painful. You'll experience more body hair and a wet dog odor. Showers don't work, I must add. You'll also find that eating is an easier thing to do, and will get hungrier than normal. The whole "full moon" stereotype is NOT true; however, on a full moon things are extremely painful.
