There are 78 cards.

22 are so-called Major Trumps. They are cards with names or titles like The Magician, The Star, The World.When a Major Trump appears in an answer, it can be indicating that the question is important, or that the questioner is at a key point in the life so he or she ought to be serious about the question.

These cards can indicate how the questioner ought to act, what he or she ought to stop doing (if the card is upside down).

If you are The Magician, then be inventive, creative, use your intelligence, use your thought. If reversed, you can be thinking too much or too long about the question; or you think you're very clever, but you're not.

If you are The Hermit, then isolate yourself from others for a time and go through what you have - people, ideas, things - and keep what is of use, but get rid of what you no longer need or want. If reversed, you can be hoarding, or be unwilling to spend some time alone with yourself and your thoughts.

There are 16 Court Cards - four suits with a Page, a Knight, a Queen and a King. Pages and Queens are younger and older women; Knights and Kings are younger and older men.

They may show other people involved in the questioner's life; their influence may be good or bad.

They can also show characteristics or qualities the questioner needs to develop; or, if reversed, you ought to stop behaving in a certain way.

There 4 suits: Coins, Cups, Swords and Batons.

Coins show money and values. So the King of Coins can be an older, established man who knows how to handle money. Or an older person who know what he cares about, and so can be depended on to make good and consistent decisions.

Cups hold liquid, so they represent love and emotions. The Queen can be a loving woman, or a manipulator who controls others by giving and withholding emotional support.

Swords are weapons that you can use to attack or defend, and they represent hardship, conflict and strife. The Knight of Swords can be someone who will defend you if you need it, or, if reversed, someone who is too aggressive.

Batons represent energy and enterprise - a bit like the energy of springtime. The Page is a younger, enthusiastic person who takes the initiative, but who is inexperienced and that may be a good thing since they don't imagine they can fail; but it may be a bad thing is they are unrealistic about what can reasonably be done.

There are 40 Minor Trumps - the Ace through to the 10 of each of the suits.

Aces are beginnings or show the early stages of something. The Ace of Cups can be the beginning of a love affair; or show that the couple, even though they have been married for years, are still keen about each other.

You are best to get the Rider-Waite deck for around $12 because there is a picture on each card and you can get a meaning from the picture.

The 3 of Swords shows a red heart with three swords through it. We know the heart is courage, so this card shows pain, frustration, disappointment, heartache, and so on.

Remember this: it's not so much what a card means, but more: What sense does any card make when answering any particular question.
