Debnath, Nath etc Bengali surnames generally belong to Nath-Yogi sect. They are the followers of Shaivism and primarily associated with Nath-Yoga tradition. They are also found to be known as Rudraj Brahmin.

Jogi, Jugi, Jugi Brahmins Or Rudraj Brahmins are a Sect of Brahmins. They were Highest Sect of Brahmins during Sena dynasty. They are Pure Brahmins. Because of this other Brahmins disliked Rudraj Brahmins and made a Perfect Plan to Classify them as Sat-Shudra. They were Successful to do that. So, Kulin Brahmins considered them as Sat-Shudra. Lower caste. Basically below the Brahmins, Kayastha, Baidya, Kshatriya, Banik.....the Debnath is below in social order than all of them. No higher caste will ever have matrimonial relationship with a Debnath.
