The dogwood has a tradition connecting it with the Cross of Christ. The 4-petaled flower is in the shape of a cross with notches at the end of each petal resembling nail prints. The stamen in the center of the flower supposedly resemble the crown of thorns, and later in the year, the dogwood's berries are red as blood. The bark of the tree also has a reddish hue, as if stained with blood.
