The Illuminati was an organization (1776-1785) of enlightened intellectuals whose goal was the overthrow of an oppressive monarchy and the control of civil authorities by the Roman Catholic Church. They were very unsuccessful in their endeavor because that monarch successfully destroyed the organization and imprisoned their leadership. They were heavily prosecuted during those times and today, they only exist in fiction.
The Illuminati often play a role in modern (and not so modern) conspiracy theories. Some people believe their society still exists and that they are after world domination.

The real Illuminati (the word comes from the Latin for Enlightened) existed for a 10 year period between 1776-1786 in Bavaria. They were intellectuals and free thinkers. They sought a more egalitarian society and had nothing to do with satan worship, the anti-christ etc although the claims persist. Nor were they interested in becoming a shadowing, all powerful secret government - that was completely contrary to what they believed in.
The stories about the Illuminati are taken from novels. Sometimes a good story is nothing more than a story.
2012 is just another year. The idea the Illuminati have something planned is the merging of 2 conspiracy theories. The first is the Illuminati as the real power in the world and the second pulled from the misreading of the Mayan calendar. There is a persistant (and thoroughly debunked) notion the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world. Somehow the two ideas have merged into a super conspiracy.
