The world 'Pelt' usually means 'fur', or someone who traded fur or animal hides/skin for a living.. like an animal pelt.

My grandparent's last name is just Pelt.. with out the 'van' before.

They said it used to be 'Peltz', of German origin.

I'm pretty sure if it's 'van Pelt' it could be Dutch. Most names with 'van' before them are typically Dutch, I do believe.

There's also the French version, 'Peltier'..

They all mean pretty much the same thing :)
