The Mayan alphabet is extremely complex, there is not 'set' symbol for a certain word or concept like in Chinese.
The way I like to think about it is it is much like Egyptian hieroglyphs and Korean writing meshed together.
There are different symbols that are usually animals or people that represent their respective sounds; and when creating words or phrases one must put them together in a certain order.
