'Witchcraft' is not a specific practice or discipline. The word can be used to refer to a vast number of magical practices throughout the ages. Even modern witchcraft (as used by numerous groups of witches, neopagans and other magical practitioners) cannot be said to have a single origin: what is 'witchcraft' to one group would not be recognised as such by another.

In the broadest terms, witchcraft as sorcery and sympathetic magic has its roots in the mists of prehistory and it's impossible to identify a single individual - or even a single culture - who could be said to have invented it.
