Shoeless Joe Jackson was portrayed by Ray Liotta in Field of Dreams. Shoeless Joe's Major League career came to an abrupt end after the Black Sox scandal, where several Chicago White Sox were permanently banned from baseball for their alleged roles in throwing the 1919 World Series. The film presumes that Jackson was innocent.
The character played by Burt Lancaster and Frank Whaley in "Field of Dreams" (1989) was Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, based on the real-life New York Giants ballplayer whose only major-league appearance was on June 29, 1905.
