Bernadette was the only person who saw the 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1858. Even the Church did not take her seriously until the 16th apparition when the vision finally revealed who she was. She is reported to have told Bernadette, "I am the Immaculate Conception." Even though the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception had been define four years previously, few beyond the clergy knew anything about it as it had not yet been made widely known to the laity. Bernadette could not have known the term. Due to her poor health she had been unable to attend school or catechism classes and had virtually no knowledge of her own Catholic faith at the time beyond what she might have learned from her parents.

The town of Lourdes was the greatest beneficiary of the apparitions. As pilgrims flowed into the town from around the world hotels, restaurants and other such facilities to care for the visitors sprang up and Lourdes now is second only to Paris for the number of hotels in France.

Lourdes is the place where, in 1858, a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous, supposedly saw apparitions of the Virgin Mary in a grotto. Even her little friend who was with Bernadette on the first occasion, saw nothing. Although she was sometimes accompanied by others when she again saw these apparitions, only Bernadette was able to see the visions she described. Bernadette called the young woman in her visions aquero - "that one" - and it was only when others told her she had seen the Virgin Mary that Bernadette realised that she had indeed done so. The lack of any corroboration by other witnesses saw the local clergy ridicule her claims but then, as pilgrims began to arrive, they accepted them as true. The Catholic Church soon saw the commercial possibilities of these apparitions and aggressively marketed Lourdes as a place of pilgrimage.
