The thing that the Greeks believed caused winter is when Demeter, goddess of the harvest, was sad becase Persephone was in the underworld with her husband Lord Hades. Because Demeter was sad, nothing grew and the weather worsened, thus the Greeks had an explanation for winter.

"Demeter made the crops flourish and grow so the Greeks praised her." Demeter was worshipped because she made crops grow each year. Without crops, the Greeks wouldn't be able to eat fruits and/or vegetables, thus helping the Greeks keep alive and healthy. This is the reason the Greeks worshipped her. She helped them stay alive and keep healthy.
