Bad things happen in groups of three because when a superstitious person notices a bad thing, he starts to wait for the next two bad things to make up the group. As soon as he has his group of three, he resets the counter and starts waiting for the next bad thing to happen (it will be the new #1).

A superstitious person will wait as long as it takes to make up his group of three: sometimes five minutes is all it needs, but if five days is necessary, or five years - he can wait that long too.

It would be possible to get bad things happening in groups of seven - if only we could train superstitious people to count so high.
