Why do demons possess people?

For those who believe in demons, they tend to believe that someone either invited them in, damaged their own soul and became susceptible to possession, or did some kind of risky activity that allowed them to enter, often while being in certain places where demons hang out.

For instance, a person might have been in a bar, which is one of the preferred places of disincarnate spirits. While in the bar, they would likely also be drinking alcohol. Just like there are people who prey on drunken people and do really bad things to them, there are demons or other spirits who will take advantage of such people and possess them against their will.

Here is a list of proposed things that may be involved in demon or spirit possession or any other sort of entity attachment:

1. Substance abuse. If someone is drunk or high, it may make them more susceptible to entity attachments.

2. Bad places. Undesirable spirits are probably more likely to congregate in places such as graveyards, hospitals, prisons, bars, and rough urban neighborhoods. So if you are in a weakened state, such as from substance abuse or certain extreme emotions (eg.: lust, rage, hatred), then you might be more likely to pick up spirits from such places.

3. Vows and pacts. People do from occasion attempt to sell their souls to the Devil, demons, and other entities. So if that actually happens, then it makes sense that they would stay attached in order to live through you or make you keep up your end of the bargain.

4. Pledges and dedication ceremonies. There are large influential families who pledge their children to entities or spirits, since that has been the family tradition for so long. So the families are giving the spirits permission to indwell in their children.

5. Dabbling in the occult. Messing with occultic practices can open portals into the spiritual plane. The ouija board is commonly associated with entity attachment problems. The real life equivalent would be opening your front door in the middle of the night and yelling out for whoever wants to visit you to come over. You might get some visitors that way, but they might not be the types of visitors you want, they might cause trouble for you, and you might have a hard time getting them to leave. The supernatural realm isn't much different.

6. Violating your deepest principles. Doing things that you know are wrong can weaken your aura. Then in turn, unwanted entities can more easily enter your personal space. You might work for a place that is forcing you to do things that you know are wrong, and rather than stand up to that and/or seek other work, you keep quiet and do it anyway out of a fear of getting fired. Then it may damage parts of your aura over time or cause some soul loss. So you have gaps in your energy field and undesirable entities might try filling the gaps. This may be why there is so much corruption in politics, prisons, the military, police forces, and other places where there's strong authority, including even the church. Such people were forced to compromise who they were and that allowed undesirable spirits to enter over time.

Amorth was the chief exorcist in Rome for many decades, he is still alive, howbeit in his nineties now (as of 2013). Father says that anyone who is not in a state of grace and frequenting the sacraments is at risk for demonic possession (this is not to say that you give possessed if you fail to go to confession one month, but that your chances of being possessed if you attend confession and Mass regularly kind of go down to nearly nothing). One of the biggest risk factors is just not being baptized. The risk factors go WAY up if you start messing around with the occult including playing with tarot, witchcraft, curses, etc. The modern culture is a veritable hotbed for Satan and thus people are wide open for demonic obsession (which is far more common than possession). The best thing to do is to stay close to Our Blessed Lord, pray regularly, keep and use holy water, and frequent the sacraments. Father Amorth says that there is nothing that the devil hates more than someone who goes to confession on a regular basis, and is obedient to his confessor.

God will only allow a person to become demon possessed if they do something wrong and know what their doing is wrong. But a person can under the influence of demons and not know what their doing is wrong. Let me explain how this works. I'll give example and then I'll just explain. Your in a cage and danger lies outside the cage. The cage is your God that protects you. Not in reality but for say. And the demon is the mean dog outside the cage. And you walk closer to the dog and further away from the cage, God for say. You jump out of the cage the bits you. Boom your demon possessed. If you didn't get the example let explain is to you this way. God is your shield and your protect and when you sin you leave God's protection and fall closer to the devil's hands. You could leave God's protect some much so that you can be under the possession of a demon and not have any control over yourself. Why would god let you leave is protection. Well because does not force any to be protected by if you don't want to
