Because they are put into your short term memory. If you want to remember your dreams you have to try to recall them the first 5 minutes of waking up, or they are usually completely forgotten. You have about 10 dreams a night so it's difficult, you can only remember every one if you woke up during each one. And also you usually can only remember the most recent ones you had prior to waking. Hope that works for you:) haha
When you go to sleep, your body goes through 3 stages. 1. Light sleep, 2. Deep sleep. and 3. Dream sleep. Number 3 is where you have all your dreams. It only takes around 30 minutes to go through the system, that's why people usually have a few dreams each night. If you wake up in the middle of your dream, you remember it If you wake up after your dream finished, you forget it.
