Poltergeists seem to be caused by living people who have "psychokinetic" abilities. This means they can influence the environment with their minds alone.

These PK agents as they are called have been well studied over the past 40 years by parapsychologists include the late Dr. William Roll, Dr. Andrew Nichols, Dr. John Palmer and Dr. James Carpenter and Dr. Barry Taff among others.

The overall findings are that these PK agents may operate either spontaneously or intentionally. The spontaneous agents seem to typically have psychological issues that drive the PK (poltergeist) phenomena. There is often a direct link between their psychoses and the targets of the phenomena.

The effects can often be mediated or stopped by treating the agent's underlying psychological disorder.

While it is certainly possible that some poltergeist activity might be traceable to sources other than living agents, all careful studies to date tend to point to the living agent hypothesis as the most probable.
