When Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden, they doomed mankind to certain death. Every person after that is born with original sin. The entire human race was made mortal, subject to illness and death, and eventually an eternity in hell.

But God loved humans so much that he made a 'loophole', a chance for all to avoid such a fate. The salvation came in the form of Jesus Christ. He was sent as a sacrifice so the we could escape hell.

In order to attain this free gift of salvation a person must accept Jesus Christ as the only Son of the living God. For those that do not believe, or refuse to live by God's law, the destination of their soul will be hell. To avoid hell you must believe.

AnswerBeing a Christian, I certainly think you should believe as I believe in heaven or hell because God has revealed to us that we are immortal and then our life on earth ends, which is nothing more than making our choice, we are going to be in one or the other place forever.

.

However, I think more than that, one could probably come to a rational explanation of both as existing without having to resort to religion and revelation. After all, men have believed in the afterlife for thousands and thousands of years, mostly WITHOUT benefit of revelation from God. We have proof from history that prehistoric man had elaborate burial rites, and look at the Egyptians! All of that was based on what man had just thought up, without benefit of God's direct intervention. And goodness knows we have enough television shows and books based on ghosts, demons, etc. to give anyone pause that wants to think this is all there is.
