Tap water may contain excess copper, from copper pipes, which prevents absorption of zinc by the small intestine. This causes deficiency of zinc, which in turn causes hair loss. People who are in vegetarian diet may face this problem more than those who eat red meat, because zinc availability from plant sources are less. A zinc supplement taken regularly could avoid this problem.
