The original Kickapoo Joy Juice was a fictional creation by cartoonist Al Capp, used in his comic strip Li'l Abner. It was a "moonshine" beverage, so it definitely contained alcohol. A present-day canned/bottled drink of the same name is non-alcoholic.
It was manufactured by two Dogpatch characters named Lonesome Polecat and Hairless Joe. I remember reading the strip in the late 1950's or early 1960's when they were making a batch. They wanted it to have "body," so they threw a dead horse into the vat. This was typical of the over-the-top approach that Mr. Capp took to his characters and story lines.
Kickapoo Joy Juice was created in 1965.
