The color of rum is an indication of how long it was stored in wood, not of sweetness.

Rums darkened by storage in wooden casks could be slightly sweeter due to the evaporation allowed by the porous wood, but the difference is small.

In some less expensive rums, darker color is created through the addition of artificial coloring, either completely or in part, in order to mimic the color given through storage in wood.
