Groundwater is much safer to drink than surface water. Natural springs are an example of groundwater that has found its way to the surface and is often safe to drink. If you have any doubts about the safety of your groundwater you can either have it analyzed at a local laboratory or you can assume it is not safe and further treat it as you would rain or surface water. Rain water and surface water are used as sources of water all over the world. One can assume that these sources of water are not safe unless they are further treated chemically or filtered for safety. Chemical treatment may consist of chlorine dioxide or iodine or a commercial water treatment chemical. Water filters may be ceramic, biosand, or some other technology. These types of water filters physically remove disease-causing pathogens from the water but do not remove dangerous chemicals. Charcoal filters act to help remove dangerous chemicals from the water. If you know where your water comes from and how it has been treated, you will know more about whether your water is safe to drink. Always treat questionable water before drinking.
