After a huge franchise success that took years to make and a 124 year ad campaign, Coca-Cola is now a huge hit. Diet Coke was made in the 20th century to have 0 calories, seemingly making it soundhealthy (or just sound healthier than Coca-Cola) making people think "Hey, this will be tasty and better for me to drink!" to add on to a popular soda corporation's reputation as one of the most popular drinks in the world!

Basically, you are witnessing the Surface Effect.

Carbon dioxide forms bubbles. Diet Coke has more carbon dioxide than other regular sodas. The surface of the "mento" is jagged and filled with nooks and crannies. The carbon dioxide finds all of these holes and fills them with bubbles. Since the Mentos are heavy, they drop to the bottom of the bottle, forming bubbles all the way down. This is what causes the fast and furious explosion out of the top of the Diet Coke bottle.
