8 is the common wisdom, but you don't actually have to drink that much water. It is true that you should have the equivalent of 8 cups a day, but you get most of that through food. You don't need to drink more or less than you are drinking if you feel healthy. Most people need about 1-2 cups of water per day, because there is a lot of water contained in food. (If the foods you eat have a lot of liquid in them, then you don't need any extra water.)
