Coca-Cola was given its name in 1885 by John Pemberton, as it had coca leaf extract and kola bean extracts as ingredients. There were other beverages at the time that had coca extract as an ingredient.
Coca leaf extract contains an alkaloid from which cocaine can be synthesised, but the amount in Coca-cola was always very small, and at the time coca extract was an ingredient in Coca-cola, cocaine was regarded more as a medicinal ingredient than a hazardous drug.
From 1891 on, the amount of coca extract in Coca-cola was reduced several times to a miniscule amount, until in 1929 it was removed entirely. A cocaine-free coca leaf extract is still an ingredient of Coca-cola.
