Well, there are quite a few types of stout. The most common is what is known as a Dry Irish Stout. Guinness, Beamish, and Murphy's are well known examples. A Dry Irish Stout tends to be medium-bodied with a lower carbonation. Done right, it will be served on a nitro delivery system which gives these famous brands that famous thick creamy head. There is usually a substantial amount of hops added, but the roasted barley will be the main bitterning factor. Other stout styles include: Milk or Sweet Stouts, Imperial Stouts (most common being the Russian Imperial Stout), and American Stouts. American brewers have been making some truly amazing stouts for years.
