Allen purchased the formula from a pharmacist in Arizona. The unique recipe is still a secret today. A&W drive-ins that feature "tray-boys" for curb side service are thought to be the country's first drive-ins. Later, A&W Restaurants added full-service dining. Allen took on a partner, Frank Wright, in 1922. The official name of A&W was selected by taking the letters of their last names and adding the "and."
