Let's suppose you're on a desert island and you need fresh water to drink. That rules out the ocean. You can collect rain water, but that only works if it rains. Your other option is to use, say, a bit of plastic to heat salt water. The water will evaporate and then condense on the underside of the plastic. If you build it right, you can have the clean fresh water run off into a hollowed-out coconut to save for a not-so-rainy day. Left to evaporate completely, large salty granules that contain sea salt and any pollution that was also in the water will be left behind.
