The forerunner of the "Kamikaze" was created around 1974 by a bartender named Liam, who worked at the Eliot Lounge (now closed) in downtown Boston. Liam added a little triple sec to a lot of vodka, splashed in some Rose's Lime Juice and shook the drink. He served his new cocktail in a beer mug. He named the drink after himself, calling it a "Liam." The Eliot Lounge was a popular hangout for runners, the press and the observers of the Boston Marathon. Someone from Smirnoff Vodka must have been drinking in Liam's bar because several years later his cocktail was featured in an advertisement for Smirnoff. They had changed the name, calling it a "Kamikaze."
