Any type of clean cup or glass will do. But if you are setting a table properly a water glass or tumbler should be used. This is a medium sized glass with a broad flat base and straight sides.
The type of water in an aquarium does not affect how thick the glass should be. Glass thickness is determined by tank size; and heavily influenced by height.
