The recorder was most popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, roughly from the 16th to the early 18th centuries. It was widely used in both secular and sacred music, often featured in ensembles and as a solo instrument. Its popularity declined with the rise of the transverse Flute, but it has seen a resurgence in interest in modern times, particularly in early music ensembles and educational settings.
The recorder was the most common instrument in the renaissance by a long what so many, many composers compose for it. It was still popular in the baroque period though not the most. So, I'm guessing there are thousands of them. In the Renaissance the music wasn't written "For Recorder" but "For Soprano" so it could be any instrument able to play in that range.
A recorder.
Possible reasons that recorders are a popular musical instrument are:Recorders are cheap - at least the beginner types.Recorders are an easy first instrument - it is not hard to get a decent sound out of a recorder, and not hard technically to play a tune.Recorders are small and portable. Some countries have recorder lessons integrated into grammar school.
