There have been some deaths recorded with legionary ant species-army ants, but I forgot which country. If you can't get away, they will eat you.
Well, big giant ants don't just run up and eat you. But, if dead or you stumble upon a nasty ants nest (i mean an ant type found in a tropical country not in Europe) then yes, probably. Though the ants would have to eat you bit by bit, one little piece at a time. Not nice.

There certainly are ants in the wood. You just have not looked in the right places at the right times. If you looked during the winter in a cold country you might not see ants above the ground, because their colonies all are deep underground in their nests where they can keep warm till springtime comes.
