Mathew Flinder's was the son of Mathew Flinders and his wife Susannah. Young Mathew joined the navy at age 15 and sailed to New South Wales.
Matthew Flinders was on board a small sloop/sailing-ship named the Norfolk when he saw Redcliffe, July 1799.It was the same ship he had previously used to circumnavigate Tasmania.
Bass and Flinders sailed to Botany Bay, where they explored the Georges River. Following their exploration, a settlement was built along the Georges River, and this settlement became known as Bankstown.

The first known explorer to circumnavigate the Australian continent was Matthew Flinders. Flinders sailed around Australia in the ship The Investigator between 1801 and 1803, filling in many of the gaps left by previous explorers. Flinders was the one who first proposed the name "Australia" for the continent.
