In order to produce enough sugar needed for the demand of such a large industry, farmers would have to grow loads more sugar, thus growing less other crops. So then the price for everything else would rocket because there would be so much less of it.

Advantage to producing it from sugar is that it's renewable and is very pure ethanol, the disadvantages are what the person above said and that it has to be made in batches. An advantage for alkenes is that it is continuous and fast to make, however, the alkene disadvantages are that the ethanol that it produces can be impure and it isn't renewable as ultimately it comes from crude oil.
