Air pressure is usually measured using a barometer. This device usually has mercury inside it along a tube that is a compete vacuum. As the air pressure rises the pressure of the air pushes down on the mercury and forces it to rise further into the vacuum. 760 mm of mercury is considered to be 1 atmosphere.
