Friends of mine who live in Montana tell me the weather there is usually very pleasant, but there are times when it can be unpredictable. Generally, in winter, temperatures hover in the low teens, and in the summer, they are in the 80s or 90s (Fahrenheit); but there have been extreme periods of weather when temperatures dropped below zero, or rose to over 100 degrees. The state also has mountainous regions where there can be heavy snowstorms: in fact, this year, parts of the state have experienced extreme amounts of snow. In Great Falls, they broke a 100 year old daily record, and seasonal snowfall was 3 feet above normal. Montana has experienced periods of heavy rainstorms and local flooding, but this is not a common occurrence; similarly, the state has also had tornadoes, but they too are not frequent, and when they do happen, they tend not to be very intense.
Montana is windier compared to Michigan and Mississippi. Montana experiences strong winds due to its proximity to the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains, leading to higher average wind speeds in the state. Michigan and Mississippi do not typically experience as strong or consistent winds as Montana.
The areas of northern New Hampshire, particularly around the White Mountains region, tend to receive the most annual snowfall in the state. This is due to their higher elevation and proximity to storm systems coming off the Great Lakes. Ski resorts like Bretton Woods and Cannon Mountain often benefit from this snowfall.
The Great Blizzard of 1978 brought snowfall totals of up to 40-50 inches in some areas, with the highest recorded being around 60 inches in parts of Massachusetts.
Over the course of a year, the most snow falls in the mountains, particularly in the west where they're higher. Many ski resorts in the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and Rockies average 300-400 inches annually, sometimes more. The most snow ever recorded was only about a decade ago on Mt. Baker in Washington - 1,040 inches. Other than the mountains, areas downwind of the Great Lakes can receive a lot of snow, averaging more than 150 inches and in places, 200+ inches in locations such as the Keeweenaw peninsula of Michigan, north-central lower Michigan, extreme northwestern PA and southwestern NY, and particularly the Tug Hill Plateau east of Lake Ontario, which holds many records east of the Mississippi.
