There are several sources of atmospheric carbon dioxide CO2. Some add CO2 to the atmosphere (causing global warming), others cycle it as part of the natural carbon cycle.

ADDED emissions to the atmosphere:

  • Volcanic outgassing
  • The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, gasoline, natural gas), for heating, power generation and transport
  • Some industrial processes such as cement making.

RECYCLED emissions (carbon cycle):

  • Burning organic matter, including biofuels
  • The respiration processes of living organisms
  • The natural decay of organic material in forests and grasslands, such as dead trees
  • Produced by various microorganisms from fermentation and cellular respiration.

In general outline, photosynthesis is the opposite of cellular respiration, where glucose and other compounds are oxidized to produce carbon dioxide, water, and release chemical energy. Photosynthesis produces oxygen and water as by products.
Photosynthesis occurs in two stages. In the first stage, light-dependent reactions or light reactions capture the energy of light and use it to make the energy-storage molecules ATP and NADPH.
During the second stage, the light-independent reactions use these products to capture and reduce carbon dioxide.
Most organisms that utilize photosynthesis to produce oxygen use visible light to do so, although at least three use infrared radiation.
The organisms that do this are green plants of one sort or another, like trees or grasses.

What is considered to be an oxygen-deficient atmosphere?

The absence of free atmospheric oxygen means that the atmosphere does not contain any elemental oxygen (O2). Any oxygen is locked away in compounds such as carbon dioxide.

How did the evolution of photosynthetic prokaryotes affect the level of oxygen in the atmosphere?

Photosynthesizing prokaryotes affected the ancient atmosphere by adding oxygen. In ancient times the oxygen level was .42%, compared to the 21% oxygen level now. Photosynthesizing prokaryotes have made the world livable today.

What are the names of the stable forms of oxygen?

O2 - "oxygen" O is a diatomic molecule, which means it exists as molecules of two atoms bonded together, it's the oxygen we need to breathe O3 - "ozone" the triatomic allotrope of oxygen is the less stable elemental form. In the lower atmosphere it exists as pollution, but in the ozone layer of the outer atmosphere it is a beneficial layer protecting the earth from the ultraviolet rays of the sun

How does the destruction of forests contribute to the greenhouse effect?

Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is not absorbed, and oxygen produced, and the carbon (of CO2) cannot form biomass), because there are no trees. Photosynthesis is the process in green plant material (leaf , grass etc.,) where carbon dioxide is absorbed, and oxygen produced into the atmosphere. 'u.v' light(sunlight) is also needed; the process does NOT proceed at night. The carbon of CO2 forms part of the plant's biomass. Trees are particularly efficient at this process, but ALL green plant material (grass , leaves, etc.,) undergoes the process. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a heavy gas, and will fall to the ground, hence it will react with plant material, and not move into the upper atmosphere.

Where do you get oxygen in the night?

In atmosphere we have 21 % of oxygen and at night it doesnot means the whole oxygen is converted in to Co2..its only the content of Co2 INCREASES in atmosphere where there is no sunlight, not to worry as half of portion of earth is always in sunlight.. and the O2 ia always balanced in atmosphere..so sleep well..

How can you maintain oxygen in the atmosphere?

Well to maintain the oxygen in the earth atmosphere you need to make sure that the level of global warming is decreasing and less fumes will be able to make up the ozone layer. With a thinner layer around the earth this means that oxygen will be able to enter and exit the earths surface, allowing oxygen to still stay in the atmosphere.

What are some results of the Moon's thin atmosphere?

Our moons lack of atmosphere means that it is a vacuum at the surface, it's like being in space. The lack of atmosphere means that meteors are able to hit the moon without being burnt up by frictional forces. The lack of atmosphere also means that there is no weather, wind or rain.

Can a candle burn on the moon?

No, a candle can't burn on the moon if it's not in some kind of atmosphere containing oxygen. The moon really doesn't have any atmosphere, and that means no oxygen to support combustion of any kind.

How do living things add carbon to the atmosphere?

Because of a process called respiration . this means that when humans breathe in the oxygen from the atmosphere is now travelling around our body in our red blood cells , but when we breathe out we release carbon into the atmosphere. following this the pants then take in all the carbon and release oxygen. this is called photosynthesis .

How have added excess amounts of this gas to the atmosphere?

carbon emissions from industrious buildings, as well as other means such as motorized vehicles.

What is murks synonym?
